There are no "loopholes," and Mattel certainly would not exploit one, and risk a lawsuit from NBCUniversal. The Masters of the Universe: Revolution stinger is telegraphing to the audience that Mattel intends to minimally include Despara, Adora/She-Ra, and Horde Prime in the third season. And Netflix would not have scripted and animated that unless they were confident they will have an agreement.

I have a theory about this. Do you remember when Mattel put out that comic cover on facebook asking who is Despara and it was anything but Adora? What if Mattel did that so legally their lawyers can argue it's not Adora if they have to.

You are overthinking it.

Thanks Adam_PoE, you don't say a much sometimes but you seem to be the person with expertise when it comes to rights and whatnot. Your input is appreciated.

The rights situation is so muddy and confusing when you have other influence or misinformation out there. But from what you said it sounds like Mattel can make toys and other media but not television, movies, or cartoon when it comes to some of the PoP characters. Otherwise we wouldn't already have Catra in Masterverse.

My question or confusion I guess I should say is where does the style guide/design guide for into all of this? And does it actually allow any "loophole" or pave any way to get a Catra design for the next iteration of Revolution?

Thanks in advance!

Mattel could potentially produce entertainment of Princess of Power without a license, but for the cost and effort to ensure they are not using any elements that belong to NBCUniversal, they could simply negotiate a license, and have no restrictions. It is less a matter of whether they can, and more a matter of whether it makes financial sense to do so.

The Princess of Power style guide provides official artwork, color palettes, fonts, etc. to potential licensees. The existence of this guide with a Mattel logo on it is not evidence of ownership, because Mattel holds the rights to the characters, but NBCUniversal holds the rights to those particular representations of the characters.

I hope they get whatever rights they need to make Adora She-Ra happen, but if they can’t I wouldn’t mind if the series explored other options. Having Despara be Keldor’s daughter rescued from the Horde’s siege of Anwat Gar by Randor with the intent to raise her like his own would be a fun twist on the mythos, and it wouldn’t require mass memory loss shenanigans or having King Randor keep Adam’s twin a secret he takes to his grave. (Randor takes responsibility for everything, eh Keldor?)

I have a chum who is in the know and all I can state is your theory is a very good one. Cheers!

I do not think they can go fire at will with the comics either. Its probably just massively cheaper than TV. The comic appearances are usually quite selective (have not read the Masterverse yet though). Even back then when the filmation canon got continued in the newspaper strips He-Man only mentioned that he fought at the battle of bright moon with his sister in a beginning story without any showing of She-Ra and that already got them enough hot water (well that and probably that they had Shadow Weaver in some panels) that they never mentioned that part of the franchise again. If you have the Newspaper Strips collected book (highly underrated IMO; some really great story telling) there is an interview with one of their writers somewhere in the middle (Chris Weber) who confirmed they could not touch PoP for the comic due to separate licencing.

I like that idea but how would you patch the plot hole scene where Hordak steals a baby from the palace?

Sorry, I wrote this in a confusing way. I meant to say that Randor rescued the baby when his forces fought off the Horde, and Randor and Marlena were going to raise her alongside Adam as their own child. So Keldor was going to kidnap his own baby back, but Hordak takes the baby instead and leaves him to rot in a jail cell, and then later wipes Keldor’s memory so he thinks Hordak taking the baby is a… reasonable thing? I guess. The prequel comic backstory didn’t make a lot of sense to me, but Skeletor seemed fine with Hordak raising his daughter in that, compared to Keldor looking pretty distraught in the Hordak baby snatching scene. It depends on at what point Keldor lost his memories, or perhaps he was even brainwashed more than once.

I also really want SheRa though, so I’ll just trust that they have a plan for either contingency with getting the rights. I hope we can get a publication of the show bible once the Netflix series has run its course.

I am hoping for her to but I am totally prepared for worst case scenario, that they will never even unmask Despara... Catra Wink

I like your ideas too. 🙂 If the creators get to make a third entry (Zoar willing) I really hope they can get a deal done for She-Ra. But if for some reason they can't, this could make an interesting substitute!

I get it now thank you. Now we know Skeletor's prequel story was made up and programmed in his brain by Hordak so it kind of makes sense if that story didn't make complete sense. If that daughter was a fictitious creation it's smart because it gives Hordak leverage over him.

I'd be up for the "Keldor's Daughter" option if the rights for She-Ra are still an issue.

I do suspect we might get a misdirection? What if they make it so everyone(in the show) believes it to actually be Keldors daughter but in actually is Adora all along, tough if they need to go that far to get Adora in as a character that is bonkers.

That also makes me more conviced that we will get a discount version of Catra and Scorpia next... Laugh Catra Laugh Adora
