As I am just now getting back into MOTU after decades away from it, I had a question regarding Eternia itself. Has there ever been any in-lore explanation for why Eternia is so sparsely populated and desolate? There is so much unsettled land and every area seems sparsely populated. I know there were wars to consider, but I'm curious if any other explanation was ever given.

Isn't Eternia like Earth? I think Eternia is like Earth. When you look at our planet there are large parts of Earth that aren't very populated too.

Kind of on topic does anybody have real cool Eternia maps they can share?  I think there was one that came with the Classics figures? That would be so cool to see.

@he-dad That's true, but even if you look at the major cities and settlements of Eternia, they are generally surrounded by large swathes of dry, arid land unpopulated by anything beyond the odd creature. I just wondered if there was any real explanation given. I know in the classic cartoon it would have cost a lot, but I meant in a lore-sense.

@adoralovely YES EXACTLY lol we have maps but no clear idea of population outside of what we've seen. I'm just curious! Even if there's no real "answer", I love the mystery all the same.

Is that really from the classic show adora lovely? Why I ask is there are lines on Duncan's hands and that show wasn't very detailed?

@ninadust it's definitely real! it's from this episode ☺️ The trivia section mentions there were some in-jokes put on the map, too!

  • I thought there was some in lore explanation that there was a huge war that decimated most of the planet. That's why the population is low and the planet's ecosystem is so wild.

How many wars depends on the lore but you are right mate especially if the Horde was in one them.

  • Yeah, I had mentioned the wars, and I'm sure that had something to do with it, but I was curious if there was more to it, since they were all long ago. At any rate there doesn't seem to be any explanation beyond our own speculations, sadly.

There might have been some nuclear type holocaust going on that wiped out like most of the population.

Could be! Perhaps the wars made the land infertile, and thus it was unwise to settle in most areas.

I guess it depends which canon you look at. In the German Audioplays, the Sands of Time were once a lush paradise full of forests and fertile land. A race of alien time travelling giants came to Eternia after destroying their own planet, building a ginormous city of glass and waited 300years for their home to heal. When they left the glass was turned to sand as the cities fell destroying the once fertile lands. Another side effect of the giant was that the desert got its name from the winds that blew through often whisked unsuspecting travellers through time.
just a little trivia their for you 😊

In its roots MOTU is a post apocalyptic setting. With a loooooooooooong distance between its now and the apocalyptic happening. Which is why its often medieval stuff with retro tech only a few rarely selcted could understand even even less reproduce.

Anyways, here is an official map I like from classics:

And here a cool devian art take on it:

@dan1980 WOAH that's so interesting!! This is honestly the kind of lore I was hoping to see, as I wasn't sure what was canon or not. I suppose it really does depend on who you ask, haha 😄 Thank you so much for sharing this tidbit!!!

@lurker-man Those are amazing maps! Thank you for sharing!! Also, yes, you're spot-on... it's all post-apocalyptic! It's interesting viewing everything from that lens. Thanks for the input! ☺️

@he-dad no probs. I’m in the process of trying to translate the foreign language media. The German audioplays are tricky because there aren’t any scripts so I’m trying to piece them together from various sources. I have however managed to translate all the Brazilian comics so far. The Italian Magic Boy comics are next on the list.
