Hi All!

I, like I would imagine so many of you, have been a fan for such a long time. Almost 40 yrs now (oh God I'm old).  I'm a bigger fan of the classic toys and the Filmation era stuff, but I do like what Kevin Smith is doing (although I'm not sold yet on that Techno-Skeletor from the newest trailer). I did like the 2001 series too, except I wasn't crazy about some of the aesthetic choices (like the power sword design).  The idea of a live action movie both equally excites and scares me.

Anyways... The main reason why I joined up and jumped in here is to shamelessly plug my artwork. I'm an illustrator who mainly does posters and pop culture art.  I've done several He-Man/MOTU art gallery pieces and I really hope you guys would dig them.

On the first 2 I really went for a Frank Frazetta style. The art exhibition that they were made for had a theme of art in a square aspect ratio, which is why they're not poster style. I'm actually considering making more of these, perhaps as trading cards. I know the 3rd one is a little weird with a nearly spot-on Skysled, yet Grayskull was done with some artistic liberties. That show's theme was cool vehicles and I wanted to make sure I showed the OG skysled design the proper respect. I had a tough time choosing which vehicle to do. It came down to the Skysled or the Wind Raider.

I could honestly paint MOTU full time and never run out of stuff I would want to do.

Let me know what you guys think of these. And If any of you happen to really like any of them, they're on sale HERE .

That gallery, Hero Complex Gallery, actually has a few MOTU pieces from other artists too.

Ive definitely done more MOTU stuff than these, but they're older and didn't age well. If anybody is interested in checking out my other stuff, there's my website,
JohnDunnArt.com (which is in need of an update), my other online portfolio Here, and my Instagram johndunn_art .

I hope this doesn't come off as overly sales-y. I really am a fan first, starving artist second. I actually found my way here because I was checking out the article for the MOTU masterverse artbook (which I need to get). When I saw this site had a forum, I figured if there's anybody who's going to appreciate He-Man art as much as I do, this would probably be where they'd be.

Thanks for reading...all of that.
-John

Unique art mate. Evil-Lyn clinging to Skeletor's leg is full of eroticism and very 80s.

@elder thanks!

The leg cling thing isn't a move I would normally do. But it's one of those reoccurring poses that Frank Frazetta used for his Conan/Fantasy art.

Personally I don't like the idea of Evil-Lyn being a girl at his feet.

If I was to do trading cards she would definitely get her own card... and the Skeletor one wouldn't have her just hanging out. Maybe id replace her with Panthor or a giant snake or something.

The word "brilliant" comes to mind.  And, trust me, after forty-seven years in the entertainment industry, I know brilliant when I see it...  😉

That's pretty nifty stuff right there!

I'm always envious of people who have artistic talent because it's a bit of a dream of mine to be able to draw....so I totally hate you right now! 😆

Seriously though, great stuff!

Wow, thank you all for the kind words 🙏!

I really want to paint Ram Man next, but I kinda feel like Man at Arms, Teela, and Beastman should come first.

Beautiful art JD! 🙂

You mentioned an exhibition so I assume these are not digital but traditional illustrations. Are these oil paintings?

I really like how it captures more of the mini-comic vibe. IE more overtly Conan adjacent and it's framed more like a wasteland than the idea of sparkly heroes of Grayskull vs Snake Mountain.

That is awesome art! There is a great mood created. Love it!

"If you feel safe in the area you’re working in, you’re not working in the right area. Always go a little further into the water than you feel you’re capable of being in. Go a little bit out of your depth. And when you don’t feel that your feet are quite touching the bottom, you’re just about in the right place to do something exciting."

Man your art is great. I’m a pen pencil marker artist myself, more comic book than exhibition type think. Work doing commissions for people. In an earlier post I said I was envious of people who can paint because I just can’t get my head around it. Your art is fantastic and encapsulates that 80s frazetta style.
you can check some of my art and commissions here if you feel like it…

Yes this! The pose doesn't feel awkward in itself especially when portraying a freed concubine with her protector. However when it comes to the character of Evil-Lyn she is her own protector.

@darkness Thanks! And it's never too late to start drawing. Even if you're just doing it for yourself.

@admin actually theyre not physical at all. I completely moved away from physical mediums years ago, so I am all digital now. But I still paint the same way I would of I was doing it traditionally, so I my color mixing and brush strokes have a very non digital look.  A lot of galleries now will work with digital artists and sell prints. They're not cheap inkjet style copies, they're usually done with archival inks and paper, but sometimes on other things like metal.  Its a better quality print than what you would get if you went to a store and bought a mass produced poster.

I actually prefer it this way, because for me it's not about getting a big check from one piece of art (I'd get that from working on a film or a game or something). I want as many people who actually like my art and would like to own it to be able to get it at a reasonable price. For example, those two square Frazetta style ones are only 20 dollars each.  So I'm not going to get rich off those although they might help me score another job that would pay me well.

It's more about trying to find my "tribe", you know. People who love the stuff that I love. People who get it that vibe. And if any of those people want to actually take the money that they worked for and spend it to get something that I made, it's an honor.

That's a long response...sorry. Brevity is not a strength of mine.

@theman thank you so much. Im just dogging it like every else and definitely would never consider myself as brilliant, but I will gladly accept the compliment.

@dan1980 well you got a new follower, and your stuff is great. In fact there's nothing about it that would prevent you from being a gallery artist.  There's a marker artist who frequently works with that same gallery. His Instagram handle is literally themarkerartist .

He sells one or two pieces of whatever show he's in. They go for more because they're one of a kind originals, not prints. Definitely check him out.

Honestly the only thing that would hold you back would be that you would probably want a slightly bigger portfolio before submitting to a gallery.  And I mean slightly. Like maybe another 5 to 10 solid pieces. Which you might already have...im just going off what's on your IG.

@elder agreed. I really like how Revelations has her break away from Skeletor. In my mind, she would be the kind of villain where she would work for Skeletor, but the whole while shes thinking he's an idiot and that she would do a better job if she ran things.
