@smitty-81 Mattel always had the rights to the She-Ra figures while Dreamworks has the show rights.

@he-dad if that statement were accurate, there would be a dreamworks, copyright notification on the packaging.

@he-dad just having Adora in her Filmation, appearance would require a DreamWorks or whoever owns the rights to that character trademark be present. When you use the likeness of something, you're supposed to give credit to whoever owns it.

@banthafett super helpful reply. I don't know everything but I did take some business classes when I was thinking about opening my own toy shop, and this was covered. Pluse I did some reading of my own on the subject. If anyone other than Mattel owned the rights to the Filmation cartoons Mattel would have to acknowledge that on the packaging and mini comics. They don't, but they did for Olmec Toys and Viacom.

But if DreamWorks has distribution rights that's something all together different and would require DreamWorks to acknowledge Mattel as owner of the IP.

A better look at the terrific cardback artwork for the upcoming He-Man and the Masters of the Universe: Origins "Cartoon Collection" CATRA figure by artist Francisco Etchart 🎨 and courtesy of packaging designer Roy Juarez.

I hope so! While not often, Catra has taken her mask off in the Filmation series before, so it would be cartoon accurate.

@admin I think in this case it's a matter of what would be easier for Mattel to design and manufacture.

Yea I don't think taking business classes or reading make any of us experts on what happened between Mattel and Filmation. I wish it did bro! I think all we can do is rely on people who worked in motu lately and Kevin Smith would be one rite? And he said a couple of years back “The only thing that I’ve been told over and over again is the properties are owned by two different companies,” Smith says. “Masters of the Universe is owned by Mattel. The She-Ra figures are owned by Mattel but (animated) She-Ra is owned by DreamWorks.”

@he-dad there's two animated She-Ra cartoons. This could be a case where dreamworks had the rights to make shiver cartoons, but whatever production companies smith was working with did not have those rights Mattel owns She-Ra Mattel owns He-Man Mattel owns Masters of the Universe. But they license those things out to production companies, to make movies and TV shows when that's happening, the we don't necessarily have the right to give it to other production companies to do the same thing. Also, keep in mind Smith is a director not a lawyer and he's known to use marijuana, so he's not always quick minded.

Pretty sure he's just referring to the rights to appear in an animated cartoon when referencing She-Ra

If we remember, the Kevin Smith He-Man Cartoon came on the heels of the DreamWorks She-Ra cartoon.

@andy_wan_kenobi you remember correctly. Also Smith is probably only privy info about cartoon right and not toy rights.

Confused Cringer

Uhhhh guys? You got me very confused with your responses. Kevin actually says figures. The She-Ra figures are owned by Mattel but (animated) She-Ra is owned by DreamWorks.” Kevin said he was told over and over again. It probably came from Rob David who worked with him on the show and is a vice president at Mattel. I have to think that guy would know something about it.

@he-dad oh it does say figures, my bad. That doesn't change the fact that Mattel owns they toy and character rights. I'm pretty sure DreamWorks has animation and distribution rights. But they have to use it or they can lose it.

ADORA!!!

Can it be...after so long?

I am losing my mind over the beautiful card art!!! And Catra's face at least looks pretty and stern, like it did on the show. Very exciting.

I need these figures now...but I'm not seeing any CC POP on Anazon.ca so...does anyone know their walmart item numbers??

I don't think Dreamworks or any company that buys the Filmation rights to She-Ra has to use it or lose it my man. She-Ra was only used once in 40 years and they still got it.
