Back in May 2024 we speculated that a New ”Masters of the Universe” video game was in our future.
We came to that conclusion because 1.) Mattel launched a video game self-publishing initiative last year and 2.) Our favorite creative development leader at Mattel, Rob David, had teased that among the mediums we will be able to experience Masters of the Universe… “video games” will be one of them. Here was that article:
Well now it appears we may know the name of this video game and what type of game it is. The title looks like it will be called “Masters of the Universe Guardians of Grayskull” and it will be a mobile video game.
This is because a few weeks ago on January 14th 2025, Mattel applied for a trademark for “Guardians of Grayskull” under the following classification: “Downloadable computer game software; computer application game software for mobile phones, portable media players, handheld computers and tablets” Check it out:
So will we be getting a mobile video game called “Masters of the Universe: Guardians of Grayskull“? It seems likely!
Now we hope Masters of the Universe fans will also see a Console / PC video game released as well!
We’ll see you next time!
Finally! I’ve recently been trying to get all MOTU video game cartridges that have been released. This will be great!
Please don’t be a game full of micro transactions.
This is good stuff. Keep up the good work AJ.
How about a proper open world console game??
Mmmmmmmmm… freemium game with macrotransactions incoming….
I have said this numerous times before, but it merits another mention…
Mattel is missing out on SO MUCH MONEY by not licensing some of their properties for video games.
Sure, Barbie and Hot Wheels have seen some action, but a truly well-developed game set in the world of MOTU would be magnificent. And the best part is that it wouldn’t just appeal to old-timers… new fans could easily get into a new game so long as it’s a good game!
Sigh… Mattel is missing a large chunk of toy-buyers right now. Many children are into digital entertainment, and I believe this is the arena that will help reignite a lasting fandom for properties like MOTU.
Ain’t that the truth.
Looking forward to this app. I really wonder what it’s going to entail. Wonder if it will be a progress, world building game or more like a puzzle game where you unlock characters.
Wonder if they’ll try for a PlayStation game…
@octopus25 A movie and a playstation game?
Mattel needs to flex the full IP! 5 movie pentalogy, video games, apps, lunch pales, coffee mugs, new adult book series in the form of novels like Star Wars did. There’s such an appetite for MOTU it’s insane. WE’RE READY FOR IT ALL!!!
I am waiting and waiting for the He-Man and She-Ra Fortnite pack that never comes
Does anyone know the ETA of this new app?
Is anyone playing Blocktackle’s Battle of Eternia CCG? Not sure if it’s iOS only or available on other platforms. Apologies if there’s already talk of it here somewhere that I couldn’t find.
It’s a fairly simple card game based on Revelation, but it’s pretty fun. It’s a bit glitchy here and there and pretty light on the features you’d expect in this sort of game, but it’s only a few weeks old I think so hopefully it will mature nicely. It probably isn’t the sort of game a lot of people think of when they think of MOTU, but if you dig CCGs it’s worth a look. You could drop money on IAPs if you wanted to, but it isn’t necessary to play or build your collection of cards.

@maruten It doesn’t look licensed. I don’t see all the TMs everywhere. It looks neat but unlicensed apps that ask for purchases make me nervous because they can be taken down at any time.
There are Mattel trademark/copyright notices in the app (and on the App Store listing) and it launches with a Mattel logo on the loading screen but that’s no guarantee, there are certainly a lot of unlicensed shenanigans going on in the mobile app space.
Between the breadth of Revelation assets used and frequency of updates, it doesn’t feel like a dodgy knock-off, but you never know.
I don’t have an Apple phone but I found the listing.

It says it came out in March made by a company called Blocktackle. This is their only app. I don’t remember Mattel announcing anything and it’s weird because the app name is called Battle of Eternia but everything else says Battle for Eternia. You’d think if they were official they wouldn’t screw up the name. I am very wary of viruses and identity theft so I wouldn’t try it.
Is that through the Apple store? That was quick. Mattel must be watching. I don’t have an account but I can still view that page through my web browser.
They may be doing regional pilots before launching worldwide, because it’s still available in the Apple App Store here in Australia and still being regularly updated.
