Is there a New ”Masters of the Universe” VIDEO GAME in our future?

Back in March 2024, Mattel announced that they were kicking off self-published video games.

Mike DeLaet, global head of Mattel’s digital gaming said that, along with being selective of their partners, Mattel will be “… launching a self-publishing initiative where we do co-development. We’ll fund the development. We’ll fund the marketing and we’ll do the publishing ourselves.

It is a similar strategy Mattel is taking with their movie development. With self-publishing co-developed games, Mattel will have more control over the finished product than they would with just licensing their brands over to other game companies. Self publishing will allow Mattel to create a vision for a video game and control the marketing, ultimately growing their footprint in the marketplace.

The first ever MOTU console video game, “Masters of the Universe: The Power of He-Man” was published in 1983 for the Intellivision and Atari 2600 game systems.

Now earlier this month, Mattel and Outright Games announced they will release three console and PC games before the end of the year called “Matchbox Driving Adventures,” “Monster High: Skulltimate Secrets,” and “Barbie Project Friendship.” Will a Masters of the Universe console or PC game be far behind? Keep reading!

When speaking with Ted Biaselli, Rob David and Tim Sheridan in the latest For Eternia Podcast (found HERE) regarding the new Dark Horse “Masters of the Universe: Revolution” prequel comic out now, Rob David (creative development leader at Mattel) had this to say about the future of our favorite brand “Masters of the Universe”:

"There is so many ways we are going to be experiencing Masters of the Universe, between tv, comics and video games and a movie and everything, so buckle up!"
– Rob David from Episode 24 of the FOR ETERNIA Official Podcast titled “My Name is Skeletor”

So could it be that some sort of “Masters of the Universe” video game is in our future, instead of just a character model crossover or tie-in? And if so, will it be a console and PC video game like the other game titles Mattel officially announced earlier this month?

Could a new video game be planned to tie into the new live-action “Masters of the Universe” movie in the works via Amazon MGM and Mattel Films, due in theaters this June 5th, 2026?

We don’t know, but stay tuned to find out.

    1. It will never happen but an Eternia MMO is the dream.

It is a natural fit. Every mechanic and odd mix of anything is already there by just picking up MOTU Setting as it is.
Lore & Story already vastly available yet still so much that can be added.PvE? Massive areas and lots of exploration.PvP? Masters vs Evil Warriors (with subfraction Rebellion vs Horde in later Expansions)Vast amount of flying and ground moving mounts and vehicles for all tastes and themesCharacter creation freedom: be as scifi or as fantasy or as mixed of that as you wantFuture expansions; its a universe with mutible worlds! Etheria as obvious next area; then whatever the Sun-Man setting is called where the devs can utilize their experience from bringing the established settings of Eternia and Etheria to live by shaping the almost unexplored Sun-Man setting.
With the vast amount of money Mattel will rake in with that they can easily buy out the Golden Girl franchise and bring that into the MOTU family too!

I like the idea of Etheria being the first expansion but can you imagine the second expansion being the Preternia from the vintage toys? Imagine the dinosaurs or riding the Eternia monorail!

      Maybe? IDK. I’d probably more into a Jet-Sled & a Ground Ripper for non-flying areas 😀
Hey, could someone close to Mattel ask them if they’d plan Preternia for the 2nd expansion pack? Need to think of a Dino riding alt; maybe an Evil Warrior/Horde side character this time. To complement my Masters main. And when you ask do not get distracted with answers like “WTF?!" “WTH are you talking about?!" “Uhhhh… Uh… wut?" “… whats an mmo?" or similar 😛

  1. If they want to go hack and slash for this a God of War reboot style game play would work. Different evil warriors being boss battles. Could do some team stuff for part of it. There could also be an open world aspect too where you can explore Eternia.

I don’t think you could do it like God of War because He-Man doesn’t kill.

    2. @asterstar You so could all the things he “Kills" are robots, Skellecons, Horde Troopers, Zombie Snakemen, or some take on them. The Boss battles for the Evil Warriors he just captures and that is where the other Masters come in team Boss battles to bring them in. They don’t kill just subdue, He-Man collects an artifact that gives him a power boost. Some levels you can use other key Masters. This could span over 4 games the first being Skeletor and Adam getting the Power Sword, and battling him to a stalemate, Next Horde, Snakeme, then Back to Skeletor where they finally capture him.

It’s the same reason why a Superman game is tricky.

Exactly. Not only is your problem He-Man can’t kill but your problem is also He-Man can’t be killed.
