VOICES OF ETERNIA: Visiting the Masters of the Universe Remastered Exhibition in Melbourne

By Cringerismyspirtanimal

Hi all. I don’t know if there are any fellow Australians or Melbournians on here, but I wanted to tell you about the Masters of the Universe Remastered Exhibition in Melbourne, finishing at the end of April. We’d tried to get there a few times since it opened in November, but work and everything else conspired against us. Yesterday, we made it.

It is run entirely by volunteers and it featured collections of action figures from ALL the series (including Revelations figures I haven’t seen in shops here yet!) and the 1987 movie, as well as a great deal of all the old 80’s merch and advertising. For example I saw an advertising board for the old He-man and Skeletor Streets ice creams (were they an Aussie thing only?) the colouring-in books, story books, comics, stickers, lunch boxes a He-Man Boom Box (?!) and so much more. Many of the original 80’s play sets were in pristine condition still in their boxes. I particularly saw Snake Mountain with the microphone and fondly remembered slowly driving everyone in my family mad with it 40 years ago.

There were also many prints from local artists; which I guess is the “remastered” part of the exhibition. I’m not sorry to say I bought two prints and a t-shirt. The lady behind the counter was as much into MOTU as I am and we had a really lovely chat. She noted how much of a cult following MOTU still had, 40 years later. While I took my husband through the action figures explaining everyone and pointing out the figures I had as a kid, another group came in and did the same. “I had that one! I had that one, he really did smell!”

It gave me the impression this exhibition was a labour of love. If you’re in or close to Melbourne Australia, it is worth seeing; it’s in Collins Place, 1st floor, St. Collins Lane at 260 Collins Street, Melbourne. Only until the end of April. Unless somehow they can get it extended again. It opened originally just before one of our lockdowns, which I imagine didn’t help numbers.

RadioVelvet on Instagram has more photos and the opening times, which I recommend checking before trying to visit. If you are not in Australia; you can go to the RadioVelvet site and look under MOTU, some of the prints and t-shirts are available there.

I just had a really great time and a great experience and I wanted to share it with fans who’d “get it”, while making sure any fans in the area didn’t miss out, if they didn’t know about it. Thanks. I’m going back to lurking and hoping for Revelations S2 news.

Until next time! (Sorry, couldn’t resist).
