Comparing the main sculpting and paint application between the SKELETOR action figure promo shots from the Masterverse "40th Anniversary" and "Vintage Collection" sublines.

The 40th version head looks goofy while the new one looks more appropriately horrific. Huge improvement. Only thing that bugs me is that his feet aren't blue like in the card art.

@durendal I like the 40th Skeletor but I understand why you think he looks goofy. His head looks like a mix of the 80s vintage figure and the cartoon.

@durendal Well that contradiction is appropriately vintage style lol

I mean, in the vintage line, the feet were always dark blue like a boot, while the art often depicted him with bare feet.

But I’m somewhat torn on this. I love the vintage figure design, but after Classics *and* Masterverse going mostly with bare feet with great results, I have kind of gotten used to it that way, yeah. Still, nice to switch it up, I guess.

Yet ANOTHER Evil-Lyn. I don't collect Masterverse, but if there was one Evil-Lyn out of the 25 versions they have made this would be the one that I would buy.

@depp76 So Mattel is really going ahead with a new subline, apparently?

I had thought maybe that Skeletor will just be a one-off… but from another site I also heard that Mattel has been mulling about “doing something again with vintage” for a little while.

Looking at the success of the core Origins, and MV New Eternia, they do know what sells the best.

Even Mondo course-corrected at some point, away from gritty contemporary designs, towards classic looks.

I’m just not sure, how much of that I still need… I have a lot of Classics, lot of Masterverse, and Origins. I’m kinda covered re: vintage designs…

At this point, what's probably needed most is a He-Man with a faceculpt that doesn't look like...what they've been putting out. I think the figure I see the most with a custom headsculpt, is He-Man. They have to be trying to mess him up after 3 years of this...

Mondo figures are a mish-mash of everything. Which is why I think they're the best figures to come from MOTU. They have some of the classic styling, with all the right parts of 200x and a bit of Mondo's unique flair as well. It helps that Emiliano does all the initial design work for the figures. He was instrumental in crafting the 200x look and understands MOTU like no other. The change has certainly helped boost the sales numbers and secure the line a spot well into the future. Excited for the 1/12 200x line. Hopefully we get a peek at Evil Lyn at NYCC as well if she's still on the menu for this year.

This vintage subline is interesting. Hopefully they don't completely abandon it after a few figures like they have in some of the other lines. I love the idea of NE and even some of the ideas, but the paint apps really hold the figures back. The headsculpt on the Vintage Skeletor looks awesome though. By far the best Mattel has done in a long time.

He was shown at SDCC, but he is not on the Mattel Creations launch calendar for October. I just happened to run across him in the website shop while I was browsing around.

@mighty-thanos There are some exceptions here and there, but 90% of the Masterverse buck they use is far too thin for MOTU requirements. It's maddening, particularly following the ideal standard set by Classics...
