No Keclar, No Problem? Will the Eternia Playset unachieved bonus figure still become available one day?

Last night ended Mattel’s crowdfunding campaign for their new Eternia Playset (or Preternia playset to Revelation fans), the 3 foot x 4 foot, bigger and better, epic re-issue of the 1986 vintage playset.

During the campaign, the more backers the crowdfunding effort received, the more incentives were added (in addition to an early backer bonus of a “Masters of the Universe: Revelation” style King Grayskull Origins Figure.)

While the Moat Monster bonus figure was successfully achieved within its first week (with 8,000 buyers), to many fans’ dismay, the successful crowdfunding campaign ended just 709 backers shy of the 10,000 backer benchmark that was required to unlock Keclar, the leader of the Elders.

So is the Keclar figure gone for good, never to be materialized in Eternian plastic forever? Well, we’re here to say, we think he’ll be back.

Keclar was a deep-dive character originated in the 1986 “Twins of Power” comics in the UK. Leader of all the Elders, Keclar notably used a powerful meteor to create the Swords of Power and Protection. He also prophesied that two champions would emerge one day to defend both Eternia and Etheria from the forces of evil.

This important lore drives one reason why we think this figure will still become a reality one day. Pushing for this figure is Executive Producer of “Masters of the Universe: Revelation” and Vice President, Content Creative at Mattel Television Rob David.

During a Mattel “Masters of the Universe” livestream event to discuss their new Eternia (Preternia) playset, Rob appeared very enthusiastic and a big advocate for Keclar becoming a reality because of that lore. You can tell that Rob David really wanted to see this action figure get made, and he may well become a driving force behind-the-scenes at Mattel to find another path for Keclar to become a reality.

Now in addition to that, it is also important to remember all the time that Mattel must have put into developing this Keclar figure. From the conceptual drawings, to the 3D sculpting and the 3D printing (which seems to have become the industry standard these days in regards to creating prototype figures) there must have been a lot of employee time spent on its conception. While probably not tooled for manufacturing yet, the amount of time and effort put into this figure was still probably substantial.

And time is money in the terms of the corporate world of course, and Keclar remains in the red, an investment that has yet to receive a financial return. So there is a good chance Mattel will still pursue a return on their investment, ultimately resulting in Keclar returning one day as a future crowdfunding project tier, or perhaps even as a limited release on its own!

So is this the last we’ve seen of Keclar? We don’t believe so. And until then, it’s important to recognize the big picture here, that so many fans are finally getting an Eternia playset (for those who wanted one and were able to afford it). And that, is pretty darn cool.

We’ll see you next time!

  1. It would be a complete waste to spend time and money on tooling and product development and not recoup something on it.  I’ll definitely pick one up if they make him available be it through Mattel creations or another retailer exclusive.  My preferred method would be to allow everyone who backed the option to purchase him as an add-on. That would preserve the exclusivity to Eternia.
