Does somebody have a list of characters that Mattel TV can use in their shows or maybe if it's easier a list of characters they can't use especially when it comes to the Horde? It's all very confusing to me. Thank you!
It's confusing to us too! 🤣🤣
I think any character that first appeared in the old She-Ra cartoon except for Hordak is off limits.

I thought it was Characters from the POP toy line that were off limits...

Oh! I thought the confusion was just me!

Yea that makes more sense bro.
Don't listen to me @ninadust listen to Smitty. If they were a Masters of the Universe The Evil Horde action figure way way back in the vintage days Mattel can use them in their cartoons. We're talking Mantenna, Grizzlor, Leech and Modulok too.

@he-dad well don't listen to be either. I'm just making an educated guess. We saw Horde, Grizzlor and a few others in 200X and Hordak and Mosquitor (kinda) in the CGI show.

Dont listen to either of you? hehe You both are very entertaining. I needed this laugh. Thank you!
@ninadust the truth is we'll never know until Ruth, Eliot or Harold start posting in this thread. And confirm two of them are dead I don't think that'll happen.

Dreamworks owns animated/live action She-ra so I’m guessing that means most of the POP characters also? You both could be right
@brasco DreamWorks She-Ra is what confuses me about this. They had Leech Grizzlor and Tongue Lasher, all of whom were in the original cartoon but from the MOTU toy line. It's confusing trying to figure it out with just what we have observed, because there's also Masterverse Frosta, Shadow Weaver and other cartoon inspired PoP characters in that line.

@smitty-81 It seems just like with Hordak, if there was a Masters of the Universe figure, there is a dual use in play when it comes to television rights. (That is, at least until 2026?) Too bad the Season 4 pitch of "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe" was turned down by Netflix, where The Evil Horde would have seemingly flourished!
I believe the toy rights are an entirely different animal.
We have the Power!
@admin I think when it comes to toys Mattel can make what ever they want with the exception of movie characters, although that seems to be changing. MOTU and POP were created by Mattel and licensed to Filmation, Jet something, MYP and DreamWorks. I think with the rush Mattel was in they didn't get the best deal and Filmation ended up with too much creative control. I'm just guessing but something about that early partnership really muddied the legal waters.

I think a lot of companies who owned big characters made lots of rash decisions in the past in regards who owned rights to certain things. Look at Marvel, Sony owns the movie rights to Spidey and his characters, Fox owned the movie rights to the X-men and the Fantastic (through Constantin Films), Hulk was owned by Universal, Punisher was owned for a time by Live Entertainment and Lionsgate.
Anything to get movies made and money coming in I guess and now these companies have to make deals with other companies to get stuff made. I think now the only property Marvel doesn’t have the live action rights to is Spidey.
tbh what Sony and Disney did regarding Spider-Man makes sense and Mattel et al really need to take a leaf out of their book if they want to build a cohesive small or big screen universe

If I was DreamWorks I would just wait it out a few years and own it all. Do my own small screen universe of animated movies with both of them.
