On tonight's MasterChef, Curtis Stone was the guest judge and he brought one of his recipes so that last night's Top 4 (Snezana, Ben, Andre & Jimmy) could all replicate it in a Pressure Test, that for once is an Immunity Challenge instead of an Elimination Challenge.

Not really my ideal recipe, but the quartet had to recreate a dish comprising Pork Fillet, Braised Fennel, Citrus Beurre Monté, Carrot Puree & Pistachio Dukkah.

All four contestants performed well, but Ben's was considered the best so he won Immunity from Sunday's Elimination. He also has his Immunity Pin for a future challenge if he needs to get out of trouble.

Tomorrow night is a Service Challenge where contestants pick a coloured apron from a bag and the matching colours team up to complete the challenge, which this week is a French feast set by judge Jean-Christophe Novelli. The winning team will join Ben in safety from Sunday's challenge. Naturally I am cheering on whichever team Depinder is on, and if she and Sarah are on the same team, that would rock! If not, I hope both ladies teams will be safe.

Tonight on MasterChef, judge Jean Christophe-Novelli set a French banquet challenge for the contestants, divided by coloured aprons into four teams. Their dishes were to be served to the other judges Poh Ling Yeow, Andy Allen & Sofia Levin, plus 60 guests.

The good news is that Depinder Chhibber, Sarah Todd & Rue Mupedzi have all recovered from their respective illnesses and were back in the MasterChef kitchen.

The two teams who produced the best main course and dessert over all will join Ben MacDonald in Immunity from Sunday's Elimination. Although Ben did cook, he is still automatically immune, regardless of team placement, from his last challenge and still has his Immunity Pin should he need it later on this season.

The four teams were:

Green Team (Alana Lowe, Jimmy Wong, Laura Sharrad, Rhiannon Anderson & Samira El Khafir)

Gray Team (Beau Cook, Jamie Fleming, Matt Hopcraft, Snezana Calic & Tim Bone)

Blue Team (Audra Morrice, Callum Hann, Darrsh Clarke, Declan Cleary & Sarah Todd)

Brown Team (Andre Ursini, Ben MacDonald, Depinder Chhibber, Rue Mupedzi &Theo Loizou)

Main Courses:

Green Team - Seafood Bisque (Lobster & Mussels), Braised Fennel, Crunchy Home-Made Rolls & Tarragon Butter

Gray Team - Coq Au Vin

Blue Team - Bouillabaisse & Indian Spices

Brown Team - Boeuf En Croute & Black Garlic Sauce

The Green Team's and The Blue Team's main dishes were considered the best. The Blue Team's success was largely due to Sarah Todd's wizardry with spices. The Gray Team's dish was too salty while The Brown Team's garlic component was too overpowering.

Desserts:

Interestingly enough, two teams both made a Tarte Tatin and two teams both made a Paris-Brest.

The Green Team's Apple Tarte Tatin, Apple Finger Lime Caramel, Fennel Crumb & Anise Myrtle Ice Cream was considered perfect, while The Gray Team's version was over-caramelised and slightly on the burnt side.

Both The Blue Team and The Brown Team made Hazelnut Praline Paris-Brest.

Darrsh Clarke made the dessert for The Blue Team while Depinder Chhibber & Rue Mupedzi made the dessert for The Brown Team.

Both were considered perfect although Darrsh's was slightly higher and puffier than Depinder's & Rue's.

The judges had to look critically at all the mains and desserts created by the four teams overall, based on presentation and taste.

The two teams that won Immunity from Sunday's Elimination were The Green Team & The Blue Team.

Immune Contestants:

Ben of course because of his Immunity Win and Immunity Pin, despite being on one of the non-winning teams tonight.

Also - Alana, Jimmy, Laura, Rhiannon, Samira, Audra, Callum, Darrsh, Declan & Sarah.

Vulnerable Contestants:

Andre, Beau, Depinder, Jamie, Matt, Rue, Snezana, Theo & Tim.

Personally, I thought Depinder & Rue should have been added to the contestants who had won Immunity based on the strength of their dessert alone. It's not their fault the boys screwed up the main course. I do NOT want to see Depinder eliminated. I am delighted Sarah is safe though. I would love Depinder & Sarah to be the Top 2.

Tonight on MasterChef featured a challenge that was all about theatricality and flair! Bigger, brighter, better, movement!

Andre Ursini, Beau Cook, Depinder Chhibber, Jamie Fleming, Matt Hopcraft, Rue Mupedzi, Snezana Calic, Theo Loizou & Tim Bone all had to bring their showmanship to the table and to our esteemed judges - Andy Allen, Poh Ling Yeow, Sofia Levin & Jean-Christophe Novelli.

Most of the contestants fared very well and some sadly did not.

The highlight of the night were the three best dishes created by Depinder, Beau & Jamie.

Depinder made an Indian vegetarian street dish called Raj Kachori. The elements included the kachori itself which was kind of like a naan like semolina bread that puffed up and could be cracked open at the right time to reveal secret ingredients like chickpea, turmeric & chilli powder flavoured potato & mung bean sprouts, spiced yoghurt, spicy green chutney, and sweet red chutney. I wish I had a photo of the finished dish, as Depinder brought the dish unassembled to the judges and then she cracked open the bread and decoratively added the filling and condiments in such a way that it looked like a volcano erupting with beautiful colours and flavours. Here are the unassembled ingredients anyway.

The judges absolutely LOVED the finished dish.

Beau made an Anzac biscuit themed dish with Black Tea Ice Cream, Anzac biscuit crumb, plum jam and rosemary bark with burned gum leaves as an aromatic garnish. The burning leaves were his flair element. The judges loved this dish also.

The last impressive dish was made by Jamie who made a dish with comte (cheese custard), pear sorbet, roasted macadamia praline and both poached and fresh pears. He then added the flair of calvados (apple & pear liqueur) infused clouds of bubbles which delighted the judges.

The three middle dishes were made by Theo (a flambe tart), Andre (a flambe egg pasta dish) & Tim (a smoked campfire beans dish). They performed adequately, but did not achieve the giddy heights of Depinder, Beau & Jamie.

Now for the Bottom 3:

Snezana made a (I'm sorry to say) dreadful-sounding chicken liver parfait that showed no flair whatsoever except for a (really sad) karate chop to open the pastry.

Rue tried to make a space themed chocolate, caramel and coffee dessert, but her attempt at a coffee infused dry ice effect fell flat.

Matt tried to make a Bombe Alaska, but he rushed the meringue which failed to set or flambe properly because the amount of booze involved actually stunted the flambe effect and left a less than desirable taste in the judges' mouths, leading to his elimination. Bye Matt!

I just thought I would share the photo of Depinder's finished Raj Kachori dish from last night. Sometimes the photos don't get posted until the next day.

Tonight on MasterChef, the contestants were given a Mystery Box, but with a twist. Instead of lifting the lid of the box, they first had to unwrap it as each box had been wrapped in various types of edible leaf or paper bark. The theme of the night was presenting a dish that is cooked, wrapped and served in a parcel.

Quite a few people did well including spice queens Depinder Chhibber & Sarah Todd, as well as Laura Sharrad, Samira El Khafir, Rhiannon Anderson and more. Other dishes had middling flaws but not too major. For some reason they didn't really focus on what Depinder was making which is a pity because I LOVE her and think she is wonderful. She shouldn't have been overlooked, but at least she and Sarah are safe.

However, the top dish of the night went to Theo Loizou for his amazing Greek dolomades with tzatziki.

Sadly, the four bottom dishes (Rue Mupedzi, Jimmy Wong, Ben MacDonald & Tim Bone) failed spectacularly.

Rue's fish parcels were overpacked so densely and were so raw as a result that the judges couldn't even eat them (an epic culinary screw-up - what was she THINKING), while Ben also suffered with a less than stellar (undercooked) fish dish - Ben even forgot to turn his hot water steaming bath on (REALLY). I cannot understand some of these failures since they had 75 minutes to work with. Such mistakes cannot be judged lightly in this contest.

Jimmy made a dish called "otak-otak", (ground fish mixed with spices and wrapped in leaf parcels) but it was overcooked.

Tim's "Chiko Roll" wraps, which looked like they should have succeeded, (as they looked really great on the outside), suffered because his cabbage filling was too thick and too leathery which negatively affected the texture and edibility.

Tomorrow night these four must face another dreaded Pressure Test Elimination, and the dish they have to recreate is bizarre to say the least, it looks like a balloon animal made of who knows what.

Ben has an Immunity Pin, so if he screws up tomorrow, he has a safety net.

Rue, Jimmy & Tim better look sharp and shape up before tomorrow.

Tonight on MasterChef, guest chef Stephen He brought in one of the most unusual desserts I have ever seen, a balloon dog sitting on a slab of concrete. At least that is what it looked like on the surface.

The balloon dog was made of molded pieces of white chocolate which were sprayed with rose-copper edible paint.

The concrete slab was more intricate, consisting of flourless chocolate sponge cake layers, separated by a layer of sour cherry compote, and a layer of salted shortbread crumbs. The whole structure was coated with English Breakfast Tea infused white chocolate which was sprayed with gray edible paint. I will try and find a photo of the inside of the cake later.

The contestants who were unsuccessful last night (Rue Mupedzi, Jimmy Wong, Tim Bone & Ben MacDonald) had to recreate this dish to the best of their ability in this Pressure Test Elimination.

Ben failed to properly temper his white chocolate the first few times, but after a few goes, he actually managed quite well, and he bravely decided NOT to cash in his Immunity Pin. Overall he did quite well in the end.

Rue had trouble tempering her white chocolate because she couldn't get it to the right temperature, but she eventually succeeded. However, after she assembled the balloon dog, before she was able to take it to the judges, she accidentally knocked its head off! Still, apart from this and her uneven cherry layer, and not having enough of the shortbread layer, she breezed through alright.

Tim had trouble with his layers in the cake, some were thicker than others which affected the look, although his flavours were sound.

Unfortunately Jimmy had multiple problems with his version of the dish. His cake and crumb layers were uneven, he had neglected to chop the cherries enough, his chocolate work was not tempered enough and he cracked most of his molds, and his balloon dog more closely resembled something from The Blob, although he did manage to get it sprayed. He did not have time to spray the base though. Therefore, he was eliminated. Bye Jimmy!

Tomorrow night is another Team Service Challenge where the most successful team will win Immunity from Sunday's Elimination. This time it is all about pub food. Apparently, I'm not sure if it was the fault of one of the contestants, or an outside and unrelated occurrence, but the Fire Brigade is called in. I wonder what this is about, and how will it affect the cooks and their dishes, as well as the judges and guest diners?

Tonight on MasterChef was an epic one. The night was devoted to updated versions of classic pub meals, an Entree and a Main Course to feed the four judges and 70 guest surf lifesavers!

No Dessert tonight. GASP - THE HORROR! 😨

The judges decided to combine two challenges into one - the Service Challenge and the dreaded Relay.

The contestants were divided into 3 teams of 6 by selecting a coloured apron from a bag and teaming with others of the same colour.

Three contestants from each team worked on the Entree and the other three worked on the Main.

The team with the best two winning dishes would win Immunity from Sunday's Elimination.

Oh, about the FIRE ENGINES, the fire turned out to be a false alarm, and although it impeded on the progress of the dishes, better safe than sorry and no real harm was done to people or food.

The teams were:

GREEN TEAM: Audra Morrice, Rue Mupedzi, Samira El Khafir, Sarah Todd, Snezana Calic & Tim Bone.

ENTREE CHEFS: Samira, Sarah & Snezana.

DISH: Harissa baked snapper & crispy potatoes.

MAIN CHEFS: Audra, Rue & Tim.

DISH: Roast quail & eggplant dressing.

*The GREEN TEAM had serious flaws in their dishes - the fish had scales in it and the quail was overcooked. This took the team out of contention for the Immunity from Sunday's Elimination. I do feel sorry for Sarah Todd, she will be vulnerable on Sunday and I DON'T want her to be eliminated.

ENTREE CHEFS: Darrsh, Jamie & Rhiannon.

DISH: Beer braised chicken wings, capsicum sauce, roast olives & parsley salad.

MAIN CHEFS: Alana, Laura & Theo.

DISH: Cider cured barramundi, creme fraiche potatoes, tartare sauce, fennel salad & salmon roe.

*Technically, there was nothing wrong with this team's dishes and they were very well received, but another team knocked them right out of the park.

*Epic double knockout success meaning ORANGE TEAM WINS!

*Depinder was the only lady on a team of boys!

*Also, since the ORANGE TEAM won the Immunity for their two flawless dishes, this means Depinder is safe from possible Elimination this weekend along with Andre, Beau, Ben, Callum & Declan.

*Although Ben still has his Immunity Pin, he's not going to need it THIS weekend.

Sunday's Elimination night will be a seafood themed challenge set by guest chef Josh Niland.

Sadly, Sarah is vulnerable, along with both her team (Audra, Rue, Samira, Snezana & Tim) and the BLUE TEAM (Alana, Darrsh, Jamie, Laura, Rhiannon & Theo). One of these 12 people is going home.

I would like to preface this MasterChef review by saying I love the contest, the judges, the contestants (many of whom I have become devoted friends with on Instagram) and many of the challenges.

Tonight was just plain WEIRD.

That said, there is NO WAYI would ever eat the dishes on offer tonight. Being a vegetarian and a dessert lover aside, many of the dishes cooked tonight were just plain GROSS.

Guest chef Josh Niland oversaw the contest tonight and set a Surf & Turf themed Elimination Challenge.

As you remember, Depinder Chhibber, Andre Ursini, Beau Cook, Ben MacDonald, Declan Cleary & Callum Hann won Immunity on Wednesday night so they didn't compete tonight.

Along with Depinder, I do love Sarah Todd especially, but oyster ice cream and steak tartare are NOT my idea of an appetising dish, neither is kangaroo with assorted onions (fresh, fried and pickled) made by Laura Sharrad - yet, these two dishes were among those who won top dish tonight along with Samira El Khafir's beef & salmon kibbeh.

Samira could have very well been in the bottom since her original idea of pork and scallops would have failed creatively, so she had to abandon that and choose to make another dish which was well received by the judges.

I don't even think I'll share photos tonight. I'll wait until tomorrow night when I am sure the dishes will be much more appetising.

Rue Mupedzi & Tim Bone also didn't fare well, although they managed to escape the Bottom 2. They both had other elements that overtook too much from either surf or turf, but their flavours saved them.

The two least favourable dishes were Darrsh Clarke's beef & sticky date pudding with butterscotch & fish sauce (the flavours - unsurprisingly - just clashed), and Rhiannon Anderson's rather uninspired lobster wontons in beef broth.

The judges warned Rhiannon that her dish wasn't particularly creative and a little on the boring side, not to mention not hitting the Surf &Turf challenge effectively enough, but unlike Samira, she didn't listen, she failed, and so she was eliminated. This is sad considering the last time she appeared on the show, she won 2ND Place.

Bye Rhiannon!

Tomorrow night features a Mini Mystery Box inside a Regular Mystery Box, Tuesday is a Pressure Test Elimination and Wednesday is a full Team Relay Challenge for Immunity from next Sunday's Elimination.

I'm hoping Depinder & Sarah will both be safe this coming week.
