In celebration of He-Man’s 40th Anniversary, Mattel launched a crowdfunding campaign last week with an opportunity for fans to fund a new Origins toyline version of what many consider to be the holy grail of Masters of the Universe collecting: the 1986 vintage Eternia playset.
With a 3 foot x 4 foot epic footprint, this replica-but-bigger & better massive playset required 5,000 backers to make this enormous toy a reality, a goal it joyously reached just yesterday to many fans’ delight.
But many Masterverse collectors have been wondering if Eternia will scale with the new larger Masterverse toyline as well, especially considering this playset’s first television debut was in “Masters of the Universe: Revelation” as Preternia, a show that is supported with Revelation figures in the Masterverse line.
Well the good news is, according to the diagrams made public through their 40th Anniversary Press & Influencer events in El Segundo, California last week, Mattel made it a point to provide a visual indicator to fans that Masterverse will indeed scale well with this crowdfunded Eternia playset. The did so by inserting a Masterverse He-Man figure to the left of this scaled diagram.
You can see the Masterverse He-Man scales well with Eternia’s doors and archways, and likely explains why this new Eternia playset is 5 inches taller than the vintage toy it is replicating, to perhaps compensate for the extra height of the Masterverse action figures.
But of course, as fans have already pointed out, displayability is different from playability. And while the Masterverse toyline may scale nicely with the entrances and exits of Eternia, we have no idea if the Masterverse figures will actually fit in some of the Eternia playset’s playable features like the Battle Tram, Sky Cage and Jet Pack Fighter.
Without knowing for certain, it may come down to how Masterverse fans plan on implementing this Eternia (aka Preternia) Playset into their collection. A Masterverse King Grayskull and He-Ro will likely look amazing displayed within this set as one captures the glorious setting of Preternia as depicted in “Masters of the Universe: Revelation”.
However, if you are more interested in function over form, playability over displayability, it is important to be aware that there may be some obstacles.
