While many iterations of a new “Masters of the Universe” Movie has been in development for decades, its latest incarnation (adopted by both Netflix and now Amazon MGM Studios) featured Prince Adam escaping turmoil on Eternia to the planet Earth, the homeworld of his mother.
Subject to rewrites numerous times over the past few years, For Eternia was fortunate to learn the storyline of several of these “Masters of the Universe” iterations early on, which all began with a huge battle on Eternia. And once the outcome of that battle began looking unfavorable for the good people of Eternos, a young Prince Adam was sent to Earth, saving him from capture. It wasn’t until years later when Adam would return to Eternia as a grown man, a story that tracked with the studios’ official synopsis:
MATTEL CORPORATE ANNOUNCEMENT SYNOPSIS:
"(Masters of the Universe) will follow 10-year-old Prince Adam who crashed to Earth in a spaceship and was separated from his magical Power Sword—the only link to his home on Eternia. After tracking it down almost two decades later, Prince Adam is whisked back across space to defend his home planet against the evil forces of Skeletor. But to defeat such a powerful villain, Prince Adam will first need to uncover the mysteries of his past and become He-Man: the most powerful man in the Universe!"
However, once Travis Knight was announced as the director, we also learned screenwriter Chris Butler would be re-writing the script. But what story changes would ultimately come from that?
Well now, we may know. Hollywood insider Daniel Richtman revealed a new wrinkle to this current iteration of “Masters of the Universe” that will still feature Prince Adam on Earth. The insider claims that Adam will start as a regular guy on Earth working at an office job, with the world of Eternia being only stories he heard growing up.
If this scoop is true, this may be an indicator that perhaps the big opening battle scene on Eternia was written out of the script. And with Adam having no actual memory of being on Eternia, perhaps Adam’s lack of recollection will be due to some sort of Sorceress mind-wipe… or Prince Adam being sent to Earth at a much younger age than age 10, similarly to toddler Clark Kent of Superman lore.
But who on Earth is telling Adam stories of Eternia? We shall see.
Please remember to only treat this as a RUMOR for now, and we will keep an eye on this as news develops.
Filming for “Masters of the Universe” is reportedly slated to begin this January 2025 with the movie itself scheduled to be released in cinemas worldwide on June 5th, 2026.
We’ll see you next time.
This sounds as good a plot we could hope to get if it had to include earth. And it is a good way to introduce the world of MOTU to new and young audiences. If it’s a hit I’d bet the sequel will be set entirely on Eternia. And if Amazon is still producing then a sequel is likely.
My take is it’s adults who buy the tickets so the fanbase is the first priority, we’ll encourage kids and other adults to see it. Otherwise why adapt an IP at all? You only have to look at Transformers One to see how badly marketing can fail a movie, or Deadpool 3 to see it done right. Aim it at the fans.
You get a sequel by minimising the CGI use in the original amd filming in the UK for the tax break, and to do that you basically make Game of Thrones with MOTU lore that’s already written between the mini comics and 200x. Done right, you’d be starting off with Keldor/Randor (they don’t even have to be royalty) and with Adam in training and having no option but to get good fast. The first movie would be mostly motivation and character building up to Skeletor. That way nobody gets truly cameoed, everybody is useful to the story. Again, see GoT.
Christ Prince Adam will have an office job.
By the power of tax return, I HAVE THE RENT! … for next month.
@lurker-man
I HAVE THE POWER OF ATTORNEY!!!
@lurker-man seriously. At least Dolph Lundgren started on Eternia. They need to stop messing with the story. Gwildor being canon is bad enough.
@jofrejkd I didn’t like Gwildor either but he grew on me like New Adventures and everything else I used to hate in MOTU.
Thank you Guardians of the Galaxy. This wouldn’t be my first choice as an origin but I can live with it if they get Eternia and the rest of the characters right.
Am I the only guy getting a Hook movie feeling where Robin Williams doesn’t know in the beginning that he’s Peter Pan?
@asterstar It does sound like Hook!
As I’ve said in the past on these rumors, one can only hope they spend as few minutes as possible on Earth. The plot line doesn’t sound very good. The main knock on the first movie was the Earth setting. I wish we were getting a Lord of the Rings type movie with a little more humor.
An intro on Earth? It doesn’t sound good at all IMHO.
Beginning on Eternia with no memory of Earth would be better.
I’m fully expecting this script to have been written on a Suburban Commando budget
I am having a bad feeling about this, then we watch it in some years and be like “this movie is great"
I mean technically… yeah, I can see that. Take the old movie. Lots of ppl where disappointed by it for various reasons (me included); but it grew to them and is by now an welcomed part of the franchise; of the MOTU multiverse (literally if you take the comics into consideration).
But no matter if you are on a like it or dislike it camp; it is the odd one out that tanked hard initially but became a cult classic years later. Not sure if that is what they want to archive with the new movie.
If its the Hook route with super minimalistic earth screentime most ppl will probably forgive it carving itself a new corner in the MOTU multiverse; and if it does introduce a bit of his moms family background with him maybe living with his grandparents it could add a few neat character/worldbuilding elements to the franchise as a whole if done right.
I’m willing to reluctantly forgive at most 15-20 minutes of Earth screen time lumped at the very beginning of the movie as long as it shifts over to Eternia after that and Earth is not seen or even mentioned again.
Sounds terrible. Hopefully they can make it work, but this doesn’t sound promising to me so far…
I’m absolutley sure that if the movie did not came at the death knell of the franchise back then but had still a strong toyline and cartoon running we would had Gwildor and all the other new ones being included in Filmation and the toyline. Since some comics where still running they already where included there. They would not had the “oh that this movie thing" stigma they still have now. I’m glad they still try to cement them as part of the overarching MOTU cosmos like with including them in the new shows.
The only person who should ever be on earth is Queen Marlena … How difficult is it to start the film with her journey to Eternia (first 3-5 min) then montage her way to Queen and giving birth to twins while Keldor and Randor have their epic battle in the palace (what we don’t see in the first film is Hordak and Shadow Weaver stealing one of the babies – save that for the third film) – Keldor gets his face melted off – cut to – 20 years later .. Prince Adam must journey to Greyskull to find the Sword after Skeletor returns for revenge… how difficult is that?! 🙃
This! ☝️ 100%
@filmgeek This sounds great!
Office job? Yikes. Wouldnt it be better if Adam was a loner-type, prepper, mountain man on earth and not a Clark Kent rip-off?
