RATINGS SUCCESS OR FAILURE? Looking a little closer at the Top-10 performance of ”Masters of the Universe: Revolution”

When “Masters of the Universe: Revolution” finished its U.S. Top-10 run with 6 days straight (reported HERE), fans were very excited and extremely optimistic that a third Netflix series would likely be greenlit for this amazing new Masters of the Universe continuity. But will it?

Historically, tracking the success of a streaming television series has been no easy task. With streaming services traditionally keeping their budgets and immediate viewership data close to their vest, other than an occasional P.R. Announcement or Top-10 list reveal, audiences for the most part have felt in the dark in regards to what programming was a success and what wasn’t.

In terms of one streaming company’s transparency however, there has been progress. In December 2023, Netflix launched their “Engagement Report”, a twice-a-year- comprehensive analysis of what subscribers watched over a six month period. It was quite a leap forward in regards to data sharing, but still not helpful to anyone who was looking for more immediate results.

That is because each “Engagement Report” (which contains six months of viewership data) is released six months behind. Meaning, a series like “Masters of the Universe: Revolution” released on January 25th 2024 will fall in the six month period between January 2024 and June 2024… a six month block of data… that won’t be released to the public until December 2024.

So fans of “Masters of the Universe: Revolution” won’t truly know how the show performed until the holidays of 2024. So even though fans have a lot a questions, answers will be limited. For now, the only data available to us is what comes out of Netflix’s upgraded Global Top-10 charts, so let’s take a closer look at those.

HOW DID “MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE: REVOLUTION” PERFORM GLOBALLY ITS FIRST WEEK?

For the week of January 22nd to January 28th, “Masters of the Universe: Revolution” in its first four days of release landed on that week’s worldwide Global Top-10 list with 3,400,000 Hours viewed.

1.5 Million Views in Week 1 for “Masters of the Universe: Revolution”

Divide its 3,400,000 Hours viewed by Revolution’s 2 Hour and 12 Minute running time and you get a rough estimate of 1,500,000 or 1.5 Million Views in it’s premiere week.

Unfortunately, “Masters of the Universe: Revolution” dropped off the Global Top 10 the next week, meaning the series views were less than the 1,300,000 or 1.3 Million plus needed to chart again at least in 10th Place.

“Masters of the Universe: Revolution” did not chart in Week 2
QUESTION: Has "Masters of the Universe: Revolution" been renewed for another season?

ANSWER: No, not yet. A follow-up season is undetermined at this point.

HOW DID THE DEBUT OF “MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE: REVOLUTION” COMPARE GLOBALLY TO OTHER RECENT POWERHOUSE ANIMATION NETFLIX SERIES:

CASTLEVANIA: NOCTURNE

The last Netflix animated series released by Powerhouse Animation Studios was “Castlevania: Nocturne“, a spinoff show in continuity with its long running Castlevania series.

Premiering on September 28th 2023, the “Castlevania: Nocturne” series did significantly better than “Masters of the Universe: Revolution”, charting in the Global Top-10 two weeks in row, with 2,600,000 or 2.6 Million Views in its first week….

Week 1 for “Castlevania: Nocturne”

…and 1,800,000 or 1.8 Million Views in its second week of release. (“Masters of the Universe: Revolution” would not have charted if released in either of these two weeks.)

Week 2 for “Castlevania: Nocturne” performed better than Week 1 of “Masters of the Universe: Revolution”

“Castlevania: Nocturne” dropped off the Global Top 10 its third week, meaning the series views were less than the 1,300,000 or 1.3 Million plus views needed to chart at least in 10th Place.

“Castlevania: Nocturne” did not chart in Week 3
QUESTION: Has "Castlevania: Nocturne" been renewed for another season?

ANSWER: Yes. A follow-up season was announced one week after the first season premiered.

SKULL ISLAND

The “Monsterverse” Powerhouse Animation Studios animated series featuring King Kong debuted on Netflix on June 22, 2023.

“Skull Island”

“Skull Island” failed to make the Global Top 10 its first week of release, meaning the series views were less than the 2,100,000 or 2.1 Million plus views needed to chart at least in 10th Place.

“Skull Island” did not chart in Week 1 in the Global Top-10 but still may have performed better than “Masters of the Universe: Revolution”

But thanks to the Engagement Report for January 1st to June 30th 2023, we know “Skull Island” accumulated 7,400,000 Hours of watch time between June 22nd and June 30th (a timeframe spanning a couple days shy of two full, Netflix calendar weeks: The Release week and the Sophomore week.)

With the “Skull Island” series containing 8 episodes total with about 3 hours of content, this can be estimated in the ballpark of 1.5 Million Views for “Skull Island” per week if divided evenly and accounting for the two missing calendar days not included in the report. This equals or rivals how “Masters of the Universe: Revolution” performed.

QUESTION: Has "Skull Island" been renewed for a second season?

ANSWER: No, not that we are aware of. According to Brian Duffield (the series creator) back in October 2023, Skull Island season two was fully written, but Netflix had yet to commit.

WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?

We realize it is very hard to tell what this all means with the limited information we have, and no specific numbers for the original “Masters of the Universe: Revelation” 2021 series to compare it to.

The best thing we can ascertain is: ranking in Top-10 lists is certainly terrific, but it also important to assess the performers you are up against and the numbers you are reaching.

Meaning, winning a foot race against Olympic athletes is more substantial than winning a foot race against your friends and neighbors. It is all about the strength of competition. It’s all about the views, the hours watched.

Your ranking is only as strong as your competition

So will “Masters of the Universe: Revolution” have enough hours watched to justify another go-around? We don’t know. We can only hope.

Keep watching ‘Masters of the Universe: Revolution” on Netflix and make sure you rate it two thumbs up when you do! We’ll see you next time.

    1. Keep watching yall. We need to make this show as successful as Castlevania! We need to see what happens next! We need to see He-Man and She-Ra together again! We can do it! 💪

I don’t think it could ever make up the difference to reach those Castlevania numbers. 😱 It sounds like it’s on the same level with Skull Island which it is scary because where is Skull Island 2?

It is a little scary but never underestimate the power of the MOTU He-Dad!

Tell that to fans waiting for the movie. 🤣
I just have a bad feeling someone is asking us to lower expectations.

  1. Thank you for this. If Revolution came out during the time of Skull Island it wouldn’t have landed on the top ten at all. I never considered a show in the Top 10 can mean different things at different times. The number of people watching is important. The question is will Revolution hit the number of views that tells Netflix they want more. I sure hope it does.

  2. A very interesting article! On one hand it is nice to see Revolution on the global top ten list. On the other hand it is concerning to see Castlevania perform so much better. Good or bad Mattel should be forthwith with their decision and not let the fans linger as they did with the children’s series.

  3. January has always been kind of a slow time for movies and TV shows in general.  It has been over a month since the show debuted, so Netflix probably has a good idea already on whether it will renew or not.  We just might not find out for awhile like last time.  Mattel has to want to make more episodes too since they are partially financing it.  I wish we knew Revelation’s numbers so we could compare.
