Back in October, Mattel announced a new collaboration between their celebrated IP “Masters of the Universe” and Paramount’s “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” brand, resulting in the Masters of the Universe: Origins Turtles of Grayskull toy line.
With figures beginning to show right now on retail shelves across the United States, Dion Vlachos (an Executive Vice President at Paramount) said “It’s thrilling to see this special collection between Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Masters of the Universe come to fruition. Two incredibly popular franchises with multi-generational appeal coming together for a one-of-a-kind crossover toy line is something we know fans will embrace.”
Well now we are hearing there will be a major marketing push for this crossover subline that will continue throughout 2024. Apparently “Turtles of Grayskull” will be a big focus… starting at the Spielwarenmesse event (an international toy fair in Nuremberg, Germany) as Mattel and other companies recognize the importance of the “kidult” market.
Also we are hearing there is a “Turtles of Grayskull” limited comic series on the way (not to be confused with the minicomics that come with the figures) that will debut later this year and help flesh out this mash-up universe.
And apparently there will be more TMNT / MOTU crossover related material that is in the works for 2024, but its precise nature has yet to be defined. All in all, it looks like it is going to be an exciting year for fans of the “Turtles of Grayskull” crossover. We’ll see you next time.
Do you think Mattel will make a Turtles of Grayskull cartoon series too?
@talonfighter no. They would have to work with Nickelodeon/ Paramount to make a cartoon.
In the past, Power-Con had been co-branded as Power/Thunder/Turtle-Con, representing Masters of the Universe/Princess of Power, ThunderCats, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles; one convention for the three of the biges action figure properties of the ’80s. If Mattel wants to promote Turtles of Grayskull at a convention for adult collectors, they should consider returning to Power-Con.
The Spielwarenmesse Nuremberg is no open convention like Power-Con or SDCC, it’s a toy industry fair, so only manufacturer, vendors, retailers and journalists have access. So the rumored Turtles of Grayskull presentation there is mostly for vendors and retailers to take them into their assortment for 2024.
