In the latest episode of Fatman Beyond, Showrunner Kevin Smith took some time to talk about his latest animated effort “Masters of the Universe: Revolution” including how positive the response has been this second time around.
One of the highlights of Kevin Smith’s discussion was how he believes the Netflix algorithm helped him make a better series the second time around, by reducing the episodes from 10 to 5. Check it out:
KEVIN SMITH: “What they learned from the algorithm and this is what they said to us, they break all the information down. They’re like overall you had too many episodes. Your show needs to be five episodes. And so they’re like, you can go again but it’s gotta be five episodes. And we’re like alright we can do that.
“And honestly, having five episodes forces every choice to be like this is gotta be f*cking epic worthy. Because we don’t have that many minutes to play with, there’s not that much real estate. So, you’re moving the story along at perhaps a more brisk pace than you would like. Maybe it’d be nice to have one or two more episodes to let it breathe, but we’re playing the ball where it laid. And honestly because of that, I think that helped it.
“Like that made people be like, here, you always want to leave people wanting more. And overwhelmingly people are like I want more, when is the next round, when is the next season. So in that way, us being forced to like you know, alright, tell your story in five episodes instead of the luxurious ten that we had last time. And it wasn’t even like a budget thing, it was just like I’m not supposed to share information like this. I get in trouble when I share information like this but it really came down to like this is what the algorithm says. Like everything would have worked out better if you only got five episodes and that was it.“
Now Kevin Smith also addressed the possibility of getting to do a third series of his animated trilogy. Kevin Smith indicated that at least so far… “Masters of the Universe: Revolution” is doing better comparatively to “Masters of the Universe: Revelation”. Hear Kevin talk about it below:
Now there are no guarantees a third go-around will be greenlit by Netflix just yet, so keep watching “Masters of the Universe: Revolution” until it’s official!

heck yeah!
Revolution has been in the TV Top 10 is the US for 6 days so far whereas Revelation Part 2 was in the Kids Top 10 in the US for just 3 days. Assuming it still works this way, a Kids Top 10 can also be in the TV Top 10, like Cocomelon has in the past, so that would seem to indicate that Revolution is doing a lot better than Revelation Part 2.
@firefly If part one of Revelation had the ratings of part two I’m sure there wouldn’t have been a Revolution. I’m sure Kevin is comparing Revolution to Revelation part one.
Yeah, Revolution could be doing better than Part 1 of Revelation as well.
Revolution is Number 9 in the Global Top 10:

1.5 million views for the week.
How can anyone be mean to that man regardless if you liked Revelation or not. I 💗 you Kevin Smith.
part one brought back the power. part 2 powered us up!.
season 2 WAS A BIG upgrade( see what i did there?) in rating. / viewing so far.
all jokes aside. i want a season 3 desperately. please MATTEL#mattel #motu #season 3 !!!!!
everyone beter re watch it and atleast twweet at mattel ! please
we need dat season 3. show them your hype!
Glad to see this! So, will we be getting part 3?!
This is a great podcast… Kevin sounds pretty optimistic about another season getting the okay.It makes sense that the “almighty Netflix algorithm" of views dictates whether or not we’ll see more MOTU on Netflix, and by all accounts, Revolution is performing better than Revelation did at this time. If the show remains popular for a while longer, it may be enough to get another 5 episode season.Kevin also makes a great point about how much of the MOTU mythos was intertwined in Revolution:*The kidnapping of Princess Adora (Filmation)*Getting help from Gwildor (1987 Movie)*Keldor is Randor’s brother (MYP 200X)*Despara wants revenge (DC MotU)*The Horde dominion over the galaxy (MOTUC Bios)*The Fright Zone (Mattel toy line)I’m glad that Kevin gets to savor this round of MOTU and doesn’t have to deal with the manbabies… he certainly deserves it for sticking to his guns. Now, it’s time to go watch Revolution a few dozen more times to try and bolster that Netflix algorithm…
Day 7 and still Top 10! Bring on season 3 announcement!
IIRC these 5 episodes where still backed by money from when they expected that Revelation has Revolutions popularity; so they where kinda an already done deal. I do not assume or even dare to get my hopes up for more now. But it sure would be great to get more.
I’m not sure if Smith had some kind or Revelation (no pun intended) or simply savoured a big piece of humble pie but whatever it was; Revolution IMO brought the MOTU train back on track; let just hope not too late for its arrival.
I don’t know about yall but I feel uneasy. Now that I watched Revolution and know it all by heart I won’t feel better until I know they are going to make the final one.
“Less is more" means a great deal of things in today’s streaming climate.
This season should have been 10 episodes anyway, not 5.
@lawgskrak Personally I think 10 episodes would have been too much. I wouldn’t mind if it had another episode or two, but I think these 5 episodes did a great job of telling the story with no filler. I think Revelation was more epic in scope than Revolution and thus needed those 10 episodes.
How long before Netflix decides to greenlight another season? We already have to wait until summer or fall of 2026 at the earliest before we could see a release, which is an unbearably long wait.
