Written by This past April (first reported HERE), Dark Horse Books revealed that they were adding a new hardcover to their already terrific library of Masters of the Universe books. It was called The Art of Masters of the Universe: Origins and Masterverse!
Offered in a Standard and Deluxe Edition (featuring a portfolio of exclusive prints and unique slip case), the new art book was reportedly 192 pages in length and featured artwork from the packaging of both Origins and Masterverse action figure lines. Which waves it would include, no one knew, but thanks to a new imageless advance review from Big Comic Page, we have more details to share!
THE PAGE COUNT HAS INCREASED:
First reported at 192 pages, we are happy to report that the page count has broadened to 224 Pages in length (an increase in page real estate assumingly to accommodate more packaging artwork than first anticipated.) It is still smaller than many other Masters of the Universe hardcover books on our shelves, but we are pleased with the expansion!
HOW MUCH ORIGINS PACKAGING ART WILL BE FEATURED?
The packaging art featured from the Masters of the Universe Origins line will go up to Wave 12 and include artwork from several Mattel Creations Exclusive figures as well… including Fang-or and Lady Slither.
HOW MUCH MASTERVERSE PACKAGING ART WILL BE FEATURED?
The packaging artwork will reportedly cover up to the vast majority of Mattel’s Fall 2023 Catalog which means we should see artwork up to Wave 9 (and perhaps some or most art from Wave 10.)
ANYTHING ELSE WE CAN EXPECT INSIDE?
- The She-Ra PowerCon 2020 exclusive minicomic.
- Some pencil artwork
- Double-Page spreads
- Minimal text “insights” behind the artwork.

This is so dope!! I always loved the fact that Mattel pays artists to do multiple motu paintings and they slap em on the box! What a way to show love and support to these artists and what better way to honor and immortalize these amazing pieces!! Can’t wait. Man, it’s expensive being a motu fan!!! 😀
@jaymeyerhoff I agree Knowgood. Not all of us collect the figures and this gives every fan a chance to own and appreciate this beautiful art for the rest of our lives. I hope the artists get paid extra for being in this book. They deserve it.
The origins card art is sooo good so this is exciting. I wish they’d given us the female characters they’d teased on the cardbacks like Delora, Sultra, Sharella and Queen Marlena as figures, they would have been really cool additions to the line.

As happy as I am for more art books, especially for Origins and Masterverse…. I’m annoyed that it’s coming out now, with presumably more waves still coming. Which means this book will be noticeably incomplete and outdated within months after the book is released. I’m wondering if they’ll release a volume 2, or an edited re-released edition, or what.
I say the end is near with Origins and the cartoon figures will see it off just like the Classics. There won’t be enough art for a volume 2.
