Last week we celebrated the 35th Anniversary of the “Masters of the Universe” 1987 live-action film all week long on our social media pages. If you missed any of that celebration, don’t fret, because we’ve gathered all the commemorate posts and collected them here for posterity!
Check it out:
“Dolph Lundgren is a Conan, Rambo and Rocky rolled into one.” A 1987 Newspaper Advertisement for the theatrical release of “Masters of the Universe”.
“I worked hard to develop a smooth, fluid, one-handed style with the sword. But it was so heavy and required so much strength that working with it actually increased my upper body strength and mass.” – Dolph Lundgren
To achieve the frog-like breathing effect in Saurod’s neck, actor Pons Maar blew air through a breathing tube hidden in his mouth, which was connected to an inflatable balloon in the costume’s neck, allowing him to make it expand & contract.
Director Gary Goddard on Skeletor: “I wanted to show a different kind of villian, someone who is shaded more in line with the Phantom of the Opera. You realize that he’s a villian but there’s something else going on underneath that as well.”
If you ever wondered if Gwildor preferred Coca-Cola or Pepsi, now you know!🙂 Legendary actor Billy Barty takes a break on set.
DÉJÀ VU? Don’t ‘flip’ out, but the live-action Masters of the Universe film gives you the same scene twice, but inverted and with some coloration and timing variances.
During some of the flying disc scenes, He-Man was actually a miniature loose-jointed puppet, animated with external rods by puppeteer Nicholas Sheldon and filmed against blue screen.
Meg Foster on Evil-Lyn: “She has a deep love and respect for Skeletor, and while sometimes his patience with her is short, she will always be there for him. I think the energy has turned out exactly the way Gary, Frank & I envisioned it.”
EARLY SKELETOR CONCEPT “With the teeth sculpted onto the outside of the skull, we found that the makeup had a smiling look to it. By having the teeth inside the mouth, it eliminated that look and gave Skeletor a greater range of expression.” expression.” -FX Artist Michael Westmore

THE RETURN OF SAUROD? A portion of Saurod’s costume from “Masters of the Universe” resurfaced on the title creature of the 1990’s film “Star Hunter”, a movie featuring an alien hunter from space.

Actor Frank Langella reflecting on his role of Skeletor: “It’s one of my favorite roles, remains so, and always will be so for the sheer bravura of it.”
“Karg is one of those great little evil characters. I saw him from the beginning as a half-human, half-bat creature with strange dental tools to do his dirty work.” – Production Designer William Stout
We want to thank you for celebrating the 35th Anniversary of Masters Of The Universe with us all week! It was a good journey! And even though Skeletor didn’t come back, we sure will!
Until next time!
