Join Us All Week as we Celebrate 35 Years of ”Masters of the Universe” the (1987) Live-Action Film

On August 7th 1987, the feature film “Masters of the Universe” staring Dolph Lundgren as He-Man and Frank Langella as Skeletor was released theatrically in the United States. Fans had high hopes for this live-action film, with aspirations that the movie would explode in popularity and become a blockbuster success. Then the possibilities would be endless, kicking off a string of Motu sequels which ultimately would develop into a huge film franchise that could rival IPs like Star Wars (just like the Mattel figures did). Unfortunately though, things didn’t work out as hoped.

“Masters of the Universe” was initially received very poorly, panned by both critics and audiences alike. As a result, the Gary Goddard directed film was a complete disaster at the box-office.

But as time passed, something magical happened. The once dismissed film began to grow in the hearts of Motu fans and non-fans alike with new feelings of fondness and appreciation. Now, 35 Years later, from the scenery-chewing performance of Frank Langella as Skeletor to the iconic score of Bill Conti, audiences everywhere have come to embrace this unique interpretation of “Masters of the Universe” and celebrate it as a classic cult film. And we’re going to celebrate too.
