@elder Ok, but you read the part where Autism Speaks to this day tells parents to grieve as if their child has died and been replaced by another? And by comparing autism to leukemia? And Shatner's constant attacks and bullying on autistic people who try to speak to him about the huge amount of issues. Autism Speaks has even presented it ok if a parent prefers their child be dead rather than be autistic (and one woman said this while her autistic child was playing behind her in the video). None of that is ok.
Also this is a video made by Autism Speaks in 2009. William Shatner tried to claim it was fake and made to discredit Autism Speaks but he finally had to admit that it is genuine and was actually on their website for a while. The gloomy tone of this video is similar to those made in the late 80s about AIDS.
Parents naturally have a lot of expectations for their children. They imagine they will have friends, a career, fall in love, get married, and have children of their own. So when something interferes with that, it is normal for parents to grieve the child they invisioned, so they can accept the child they have. This is not unique to neurodivergent children. It is also true of LGBTQ children and others. For example, when a transgender girl transitions, the parents are losing their son, and gaining a daughter. It is normal for them to be sad that their son will effectively no longer exist. They had many years with him. That does not mean they love their daughter any less. Moreover, being a lifelong caregiver to a person with low-functioning Autistim is profoundly challenging. Elderly parents who need their adult children to care for them at the end of their life will still be providing care for an adult whom they can no longer manage. It is normal for people in those situations to despair, and think things would be better if their child had died instead of having these challenges. But you are so in your own feelings, that you are unwilling or incapable of thinking outside of yourself, and allowing others theirs.
Awesome article!
And then I got to the comments!

@he-dad Come for the Keldor talk. Stay for the Autism debate.
Also what happened to that guy. It says Anonymous 12343 now. Did he leave or was he kicked?
@caliban I checked the logs. The dude deleted his account and left.

@he-dad Fragile people that can't handle a little discussion and debate.
You can see from the way he characterized those Tweets, that he considers simple disagreement as attacking, bullying, and harassment. Anything less than total capitulation makes someone a bad person. I cannot imagine being so insecure in my own position that I need others to agree with me.

Not sure how possible it is but since they show themselfes out anyway can't we just throw their garbage they left behind out after them? Or move them to another thread if there is a more suited one for that. This thread, the article is not just really positive energy its also a pretty nice beacon to get eyes on this community; having someone draging his pseudo twitter culture warfare fetish right into the first page is kinda smearing it all.
I'm not advocating to not share hot takes about all things in the forums at all; but rather keep them to certain threads and let ppl have just fun in other threads (like this).
This is so cool. I love seeing the other celebrities too. Walter Koenig looks so young for his age. Now you need to go find Mark Hamill and complete the autographs set.

I am all for this idea!
That makes sense. I'll try to move this into another thread
