NEW ”Masters of the Universe” MOVIE gets a Release Date: June 5th 2026!

We finally have a new update for the long-in-development “Masters of the Universe” live-action movie!

The last thing we heard (reported HERE) was that Travis Knight, director of the celebrated Transformers film “Bumblebee”, was reportedly in final negotiations to replace the Nee Brothers and direct the new “Masters of the Universe” feature film.

Well now the Hollywood trade Variety is reporting that the deal is done and Travis Knight will indeed helm the new Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel Films He-Man movie, which is slated for a JUNE 5th 2026 worldwide theatrical release!

As reported before, screenwriter Chris Butler is re-writing the screenplay with Mattel Films’ Robbie Brenner, Escape Artists’ Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch producing.

Writer Chris Butler

Here is the official Synopsis:

"Masters of the Universe” introduces a 10-year-old Prince Adam, who crashed to Earth in a spaceship and was separated from his magical Power Sword — the only link to his home on Eternia.

After tracking it down almost two decades later, Prince Adam is whisked back across space to defend his home planet against the evil forces of Skeletor. But to defeat such a powerful villain, Prince Adam will first need to uncover the mysteries of his past and become He-Man: the most powerful man in the Universe!”

In regards to the film’s cast, Variety is reporting “casting on the project has yet to be announced“. This lends credence to our report last month that actor Kyle Allen might not be playing He-Man any longer. (That report can be found HERE).

Will this finally be the time when a new Masters of the Universe live-action film becomes a reality? Stay tuned to ForEternia.com to find out.

And thanks to our awesome community member @he-metayer for the ‘heads up‘!

We’ll see you next time!

    1. I do not like the synopsis.

If I had to say something positive about that it would be that I’m still looking for an positive angle to look at it; that I really and honestly wish for the movie to be a pleasant surprise.

    2. I do not like the synopsis.

Agreed. I don’t know WHY we always need to involve Earth somehow. Just have the story take place on Eternia. This is a sci-fantasy property with lore and backstory. Its not like Barbie at all. I want MOTU to make it big into the cultural zeitgeist again, but a part of me hopes this film never sees the light of day. I’d rather fade into obscurity then be a laughing stock.

  1. I’m still not fond of the plot details. Early June can be hit or miss as far as the summer box office release dates. Unless they get to filming in the next few months, I wouldn’t be surprised if they move from that spot.

    1. @firefly that’s a very fair point. it’s a blockbuster sci-fantasy after all. a movie like this will require tons of prep and work, lots of special effects are in order, huge cast etc.
so in order realistically have it ready by june of ’26, they will need to start production by this summer. if they are able to announce such an early release date, then i would say it’s safe to assume that the final draft of the film’s script has already been completed by now (if not near completion, at least)
it looks like it won’t be long before we find out the name of the actors playing he-man and skeletor. ♡

  2. With that synopsis I hope this one-more-time try also FAIL! Hopefully it will never get done. I don’t understand why a He-Man movie needs to have a crappy plot, being that we have enough fine source material that could be used. Even fan-made stories are far better than this.

  3. Call me contrary if you like, but I think the plot sounds fine, what little we know of it. When I read it, I kind of thought they’re probably going for a bit of a Guardians of the Galaxy-esque vibe. Could be fun.
On the other hand, I don’t harbour many hopes that it’ll actually get made, given the history so far! But if it does, then I’m not writing it off just from the synopsis.

  4. i’m very pleased to hear that the movie will be a theatrical release. ^_^ streaming has the convenience factor but to see he-man and eternia on the big screen is what our community has LONG been hoping for. the anticipation of driving to the theater, with your family and friends, talking all about he-man and how excited you are for the movie, the atmosphere of sitting in the auditorium, surrounded by dozens of other motu fans. PLUS, with a theatrical release, comes a physical home media release for our collections. when a movie is on streaming, it’s just like it’s “locked" to streaming. not to mention that a worldwide theatrical release is exactly what motu needs to once again have mainstream success.  as for the plot, well… there isn’t much we can gather from the only short, little description that ‘s publically available. so i will withhold my judgement for now and will instead keep an open mind and remain optimistic.  personally, i think the team of travis knight and chris butler is very fitting for a motu movie. the two men are long-time creative partners (motu will be their FIFTH project together) and their films often spotlight… 1) young adult characters, who are misfits/outsiders (even in their own families.) 2) magical/fantastical circumstances happening in otherwise mundane settings. 3) their films feature a vast array of quirky and offbeat characters (and creatures…..EVEN locations) 4) ALL of their films are coming-of-age stories. motu is the ULTIMATE coming-of-age story. one day, you’re a skinny, soft-spoken teenage boy with the combat skills of a puppy and the leadership skills of well, a teenage boy. next thing you know, you’re chosen to be the literal most powerful man in the universe, with the height, muscular and weapons to go along with it. you go from being a prince, who has everything done for you to being responsible for the well-being and balance of the whole of eternia. talk about going from zero to a hundred! as long as travis, chris and their team stick to these four core fundamentals (and i believe they can and will, given their filmography and style) then no matter what direction they go in, the motu movie will still FEEL like a motu movie.

    1. @miamihe-man not a bad casting choice, i like this. ^^ i like how you’re thinking outside the box with who to play our hero.
you make a great he-man too, btw. i really love your cosplay. you look amaze °•♡•°

Aww, you are just saying that because you are my sister.  Thank you, Adora. 😊 👍

  5. Meg Foster was dynamic as Evil-Lyn in the original Masters Of The Universe live action movie from 1987, and if anyone could successfully pull off the role now, looks-wise and performance-wise, it would and should be Antje Traue who played Faora in Man Of Steel (2013). 😀
Supergirl’s Melissa Benoist should play Teela (after having voiced her in MOTU Revolution) and Nicole Kidman should be The Sorceress – she was brilliant as Queen Atlanna in the Aquaman movies. 😀

I like all your casting choices. I’m a huge Melissa Benoist fan!

  6. NOOOOO! We’ve been waiting almost 40 years to be redeemed from the 87 movie! Don’t they know it sucked partially because it was on earth! ALL WE WANT IS A GOOD MOVIE ON ETERNIA!!! For the love of f@¢<!ng God, DO NOT SET THIS ON EARTH!!!! That's like setting Star Wars on earth, or LOTR in modern NYC… Are they gonna do some dumb $#!t like have Adam go to highschool? Oh God, if that happens MOTU fans will riot

  7. I posted a screenshot of the synopsis of a FB MOTU forum last night. Already has 100+ comments. All but two ppl are p!$$ed that it’s on earth at all… Adam is Adam because of his connection to Eternia, Duncan, Teela, his parents and so much more.

    MOTU is to Eternia as
    LOTR is to Middle Earth.
Please have someone who loves MOTU fix the script

Not that it makes it better but it might be a budgetary issue just like the 87 film.

personally, i’m trying to keep an open mind for now until a longer synopsis is made available. i agree with you, i honestly don’t mind the idea of the movie taking place partially on earth, as long as the majority of it takes place on eternia. like, maybe the opening scenes are on eternia with ten year old adam being sent to earth by his parents, then only the next 15 minutes takes place on earth as an 18 year old, amnesiac adam discovers the truth of his past and is taken back to eternia, where the rest of the movie will take place.
kind of like what happened with adora in dreamworks she-ra or adam in the cgi series.

    2. @adoralovely Queen Marlena is from Earth. I wonder if she has family on Earth and that is who watches Adam.

I occasionally thinker with the idea how it would play out if He-Man/Adam had to go to Earth for some reason (not 87 movie style of course; but the one with human Marleena as mom) and meet his human grand parents.
Not sure how to think about raising him. I mean sure, its probably the best choice and is probably an interesting hook for everyone raised by their grand parents when their parents fought Skeletor or had both day jobs but… uhh… such strong Martha & Jonathan vibes 😐
Edit:But what I would do love in all that is that they would not only have proof that their daughter is still (hopefully!) alive but they do have a grand kid. Since they probably had a terrible time assuming their daughter died in space its a kinda heart warming thought IMO. 🙂

Did any of the comics or shows get into Marlena’s private life on Earth like what her family was like or the amount of siblings she has?

We only know that she is Marlena Glenn, Captain of the space probe Valiant, pilot of the Rainbow Explorer, and one of the first female space explorers on Earth.

It’s unexplored territory then for the movie writer.

Basically what Adam said. Outside of that no, I do not think so. Maybe we can extrapolate from this that she is likely a highly skilled/decorated air force or marine corps member? Ain’t that usually the ones becoming NASA pilots?

Maybe. I don’t know military stuff. Only geeky stuff. 🤓

According to the synopsis, Adam arrives on Earth at age 10, but does not find the Sword of Power until age 30. Then he returns to Eternia, and has to relearn who he is. It sounds like a way to make Adam/He-Man similar to Peter/Star-Lord. So he can be an adult child who makes contemporary Earth popculture references.

  8. I am definitely excited for this release. So far, there are five movies I really want to see over the next couple of years.

    Snow White
    Superman Legacy
    Masters Of The Universe
    The Batman 2
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem 2

  9. Can we get Dolph for King Miro or Eldor or something? I think that would be awesome. Maybe those roles are too “old man-y" for him though, since he’s still in great shape. Not sure what other older MOTU character he could play who still kicks ass though. He’s too old for Man-At-Arms. Count Marzo?? I wouldn’t really want to see him play a villain though.
Zodac? He doesn’t necessarily have to be a young actor considering his wise, Watcher-type nature. That could be a good fit for him.
